VR advertising sucks really bad

VR has a marketing problem. It's facebooks fault.1

Because, For some reason, facebook has decided to advertise VR as a lifestyle thing. Most ads are just people using the Quest to work. Why would you do that. That's so much less efficient than just using a regular screen plus a mouse and keyboard. Why not just show off the thing VR is actually good at: videogames. I can guarantee, 20 minutes of beatsaber can convince anyone that VR is worth it. Make the ads about that. Or Robo Recall. Or Blade and sorcery. Or any other VR game. Instead, VR is marketed as some sort of bullshit web 3.0 "everything platform", even though:

  1. literally noone wants that
  2. VR is terrible for that use case

Like, seriously. Who wants to do their shopping in VR. That's completely deranged. You're just making things more difficult for no reason. "Oh, it's amazon but with extra steps". What an incredible value proposition.

You know what's an even better value proposition, Mark? Robot Devil May Cry. That's it. That's all you need. I know you're an idiot, but like. Come on. I can either use this cool new technology to do what i can already use my computer for, but less efficient. Or... I can rip off a robots head, teleport behind another robot, use said robots head to bash in the head of the other robot and then steal that robots shotgun to shotgun juggle the robot currently jumping at me and then throw said shotgun at another robot, and then catch it mid-air once it bounces back. Which one of these scenarios sounds more fun to you. Not every technology needs to be a lifestyle. Sometimes, we should just use it to kill a bunch of robots in a videogame.

Basically, what I'm saying is that we should all play robo recall because it's awesome. That's the moral of this Blogpost. Thank you for coming to my ted talk.

  1. I'm not going to call them meta, they're still facebook in my eyes.
